is a nonprofit charity dedicated to sharing the Spirit of Christmas with the underprivileged children and elderly of Alamance County.
We were founded over 80 years ago by a local fireman, Roma Fortune. Since that time we have devoted ourselves to his original vision of seeing that no child in Alamance County wakes up on Christmas morning without a present under their tree, as well as to the expanded vision of caring for the forgotten elderly.
Alamance County has grown; and so has the need for assistance. In the early years, less than 100 families a year were served. Today, a full-time executive director and a part-time staff of five, dozens of volunteers and hundreds of sponsors serve over 800 families a year.
An excerpt from the children's poem “The Night Before Christmas” says, “the stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.” That's what Christmas Cheer has been doing for over half a century, “Keeping Hope alive in the heart of a child.”
We are funded and supported by the generosity of people, just like you, who want to help the underprivileged children and elderly in our community.
